UNFINISHED (1951/2012)

Unfinished, HD Video, 2012 4 minute excerpt from 17 minute film based on an unfinished 1951 film by Ricky Leacock
In the summer of 1951, Ricky Leacock (then married to anthropologist Eleanor Leacock) visited Labrador, Canada and documented the indigenous Innu people living there. He never returned to finish the film or to record sound. In 2008, a few months before his death, Ricky sent me a CD of his unfinished footage. I screened his film for the inhabitants of the village he visited decades ago and recorded their reactions. Many of them had never seen film footage from this time in Innu history, before sedentarization on the reserves began to harm Innu life. The images from the film, as one elder in the community said, "woke the people up."
